Game Show is an interactive LCD artwork commissioned by the State of Oregon for the entrance of the new Matthew Knight Arena at the University of Oregon, Eugene.
The artwork tracks the movement and flow of play on the Arena court using an overhead camera. The live activity is displayed on a tessellated concertina graphic surface, in deep greens and lightning yellows. These colours and the surface itself were inspired by the iridescence present in mallard feathers, a link suggested by the team nickname (the Ducks) and their kit colours.
The piece communicates the flow and poetic motion of a fast-paced game of basketball or volleyball to those outside the arena bowl. It generates a graphical interpretation of the game, giving an artistic impression of the activity and intensity on-court in real-time.
With a designed lifespan of twenty years, it is certain that this artwork will become an established part of Ducks fan culture. Bringing together stunning visuals, cutting edge generative art and the energy of the fans and players, Game Show is a true world first.
